Summer social races - saturday 21st August 2010

10 mile/10K time run, 21 August 2010

A big well done to Paul, Dave and Alan, for completing the very wet and muddy 10mile time run on Saturday 21 August. It was an extremely mixed bag of weather, warm, muggy, damp and at times torrential rain. It also became apparent that some members were taking the run very seriously: Alan’s warm up consisted of running up to the club and was followed by some fancy footwork and skipping around the cricket field perimeter – sorry no photos of this!

After trying to delay the start, by pretending to wait for Richard, Alan set off first (2.40pm) making sure that we all knew he wouldn’t be back by 4pm because he had been waiting for Richard. He was closely followed out by Dave and Paul (both at 2.45pm), although Paul decided to add additional mileage by keeping to the trail, or maybe he just couldn’t remember the whole route?

By the time they reached the 7 mile mark they were all very wet and muddy and complaining loudly about the downpour (complaining results in minus points).
The positions at this point were Paul, Alan, Dave, but after the pit stop the positions changed to Alan, Paul Dave. In addition to the changing positions, other points were gained and lost due to clothing crises –i.e points were deducted when Paul and Alan arrived stripped down to their shorts, but Alan was to receive additional points for complaining about his nipple soreness and consequently battling in the face of adversity.

It was an extremely close finish, with all 3 being within only one minute of each other; Paul first, followed by Dave and then “I won’t be back by 4 o clock” Alan.

A big thank you to Helen for coming to help out, particularly since she’d intended to run but had recently injured her ankle.

The scoring system is as follows aka The Wards Awards
points & explanation

Helen
+1000 For being able to shop (in Derby) and make 3 purchases, while marshalling, and while intending to keep her purse in the car

*Richard – where were you? We need to verify that you were intending to run with Alan, it was touch and go as to whether he would still be waiting for you now

We might consider running this again (or similar) early next year - we’d like to know if people think this is a good idea or not - cheers
